Dear teachers, I hope this e-mail finds you well. With this newsletter, I would like to inform you about the following topics:

I would also like to emphasize that a high number of participants is crucial for a systematic evaluation and further development of the project. The online survey will close on Saturday, February 28, 2015. Dear teachers,

This is the final newsletter before we will all take our holiday break and fill up our batteries for the new year. This last month has been beyond exciting with our concluding Going Green events and the student competition that impressed us all and showed us once again that the hard work, time, and energy you and your students put into Going Green was worth it in the end!

We would like to thank all of you for your outstanding contributions to the success of Going Green. We received many motivating news from different parts of the country – students who organized a flash mob, others who designed a mobile app, individuals and groups who reached out to local businesses, scholars, and policy makers, an entire course that interviewed NGO representatives on Skype, and the many news reports that appeared in newspapers, on school websites, and even on the radio – this all would not have been possible without you and your students. They designed an action plan for their school that comprises an annual sustainability day, a plan for a compost and school garden, and a water filling station. Wow!

The Going Green Project is progressing. As of this week, some 850 users have been registered on our Moodle platform, and we know from many teachers that they share these materials with colleagues and their courses! Many student groups have already taken their eco-challenge and presented their findings and experiences in the Virtual Town Hall. Many students have also participated in an online exchange with our experts of the week. We hope you all have had a great start to the new school term so far. The fall season is now upon us and our Going Green Moodle platform is growing day by day with now more than 400 participants and many interesting discussions and student projects.

Yesterday, world leaders from government, finance, business, and civil society came together in New York to debate the challenge of global warming at this year’s UN Climate Summit ( http://www.un.org/climatechange/summit/ ). Dear teachers, The new school term is in full swing now in almost all parts of Germany and the U.S. and so we are launching the hot phase of our Going Green 2014 project! Participating teachers and the organizing team met last Friday in Berlin at the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung to mark the official start of the Going Green project, discuss current issues in sustainability in both countries, and get to know the Moodle platform and fellow participants.

Please register your personal e-classroom by sending a brief notification to our webmaster, Ms. Katja Krüger (LIFE e.V./eXplorarium) at krueger@goinggreen2014.org.

If you would like to share an e-classroom with a second learner group (e.g. German-American tandems), please mention this in the e-mail and name your partner teacher as well. Let us also know should you need more than one e-classroom, e.g. if you wish to conduct the project in separate courses. We will make enough copies of the e-classroom for you and send you the enrolment key, which you can then forward to your students.

Dear teachers, As announced in the previous newsletter, we are now happy to launch the preview of the Going Green 2014 Moodle course! Visit the platform at http://moodle.goinggreen2014.org/ and briefly register as a user. Once your registration is complete, you will have access to the preview e-classroom and the Virtual Town Hall:

Preview e-classroom (enrolment key: GG14classroom)

The preview e-classroom is a copy of the e-classroom that you and your students will be given for the project. It contains all learning and support materials, links, and task-cycles that you will also find in your personal e-classroom. It has three general chapters: (1) What is sustainability?, (2) Exploring the challenges (with four optional subchapters), and (3) Your sustainability action plan. In addition, chapter (4) Tips, Resources, and Tools contains additional resources that you can consult as needed. At the top of each chapter you will also find a link called “TEACHING NOTES” with more in-depth information and rationales for the tasks in this particular chapter.

Virtual Town Hall (enrolment key: GG14townhall)

The Virtual Town Hall is the platform’s meeting point, which all Going Green participants can access. It offers the opportunity to present your course, organize course partnerships, contact the team of Going Green experts, participate in the Going Green student competition, and find many more helpful resources.

Dear teachers and educators, We are glad to have you on board the Going Green 2014 project and are now happy to announce the start date of the project and its Moodle platform. As you have indicated your interest on the Going Green website, we will prepare a private e-classroom for you and your students on our platform. Take some time to browse through the materials and tasks and familiarize yourself with the platform. We have tried to provide a clear and intuitive structure along with many support materials to help you implement this exciting project in your classrooms. Remember, you are free to decide to which degree you would like to include these materials and whether you want to follow our suggested blended-learning concept or a more traditional, “offline” concept.

The platform with a guest access and a preview Going Green 2014 e-classroom with all materials and tasks will go online on August 15, 2014. You can already register on the platform at http://moodle.goinggreen2014.org/ .
